About Ken’s Fish Sculptures “Ken’s Fish Sculptures” applies to both Ken's Fish High Density Urethane Sculptures (“Life-Size Replicas”, “Jumbo Series”) and Ken's Fish Wood Sculptures (“Life-Size Replicas”, “Miniature Series”). Ken's Fish Sculptures are not only for the art enthusiast who truly appreciate the beauty and realism of three-dimensional arts, but also for the fisherperson who insists on the ultimate One-Of-A-Kind replica of their trophy fish. All of Ken's Fish Sculptures are fully animated and can be viewed from all angles. They are anatomically correct as if they were alive in their own environment. They are so detailed and painted in such a way that you would believe they are a real fish. As Ken quotes himself, “Fish sculptures so real…No one will ever know…It’s one of Ken's!” That is until you own one for which then you will be showing everyone and telling them all about Ken's Fish. Life-Size Replicas Ken's most popular “One-Of-A-Kind” replicas are sculpted from a lightweight High Density (HD) Urethane which lends itself well to the detail and character of that of a live fish and with the durability and longevity of a “Ken's Fish Reproduction”. This medium is not widely used because of its lack of accessibility and knowledge about this unique medium. Ken's “One-Of-A-Kind” “Life-Size Replicas” are sculpted to the exact measurements and proportions of your trophy fish. Ken's Fish Sculptures are displayed on the wall (finished on one-side) or as a pedestal display (viewable from all angles) with or without the optional habitat display. For all of Ken's Fish Sculptures, he highly recommends the habitat as it compliments his fish very well for a complete work of art. Ken's “One-Of-A-Kind” replicas up to 18 inches in length are also available in wood (pedestal display with habitat only) which features the greatest detail of all mediums. What’s Needed? What Ken will need to make an exact replica of your trophy fish is a good quality close up photo of the fish only and the overall length. If possible the girth at its widest point is helpful. Ken realizes that we are not all professional photographers so no need to worry if you don’t have a good photo of your fish as Ken has an ample collection of fish photos to work from, all Ken needs is an accurate measurement of the overall length. If you would like more information and pointers on taking photos of your fish, contact Ken's Fish and he will be more than happy to send you a detailed explanation (MS Word document). The Creation Process Once Ken receives your order for commissioned work he will first contact you to discuss your preferences on how your replica will be displayed and the type of habitat that will be created. First you will choose the medium of your choice and whether your replica will be displayed on the wall or as a pedestal display. Then you will decide on what kind of action pose your fish replica is to be in; swimming, jumping, rising for a fly or picking up a tasty morsel off the river bed. Any type of display is possible with the habitat conducive to the species which will ultimately compliment your replica. Your best photo of the fish is then scanned, edited in a graphics program to pick up all the detail (spot patterns, markings etc.) and then printed out to the exact length you have specified, for which it is then used as a template pattern. The pattern is then placed on the medium that you have chosen and is traced onto it. The silhouette of the fish is cut out from the block and all the harsh corners are removed and the basic shape of your fish starts to take place. Then the body and fins are shaped and smoothed to the correct body contours and fin animation. Next the sculpture will undergo hours of detailing such as sculpting the scales, fin rays and all the crevices and creases in the head. When all the detail is finished it is then ready for painting. The replica is painted with various methods and techniques and applied in layers to give it the depth of that of a real fish. Once the replica is complete the habitat work begins. Ken uses various methods, materials and techniques to accomplish the preferences and composition. No plastic aquarium plants or mass produced taxidermy supplies are used in Kens' habitat scenes. He will create it all by reproducing some of his own pieces to sculpting new ones or in some cases using the real thing such as driftwood to complete the habitat. The habitat may include aquatic vegetation, driftwood, rocks and or baitfish. The habitat is designed to compliment the replica with the replica as the focal point. When the overall display is assembled and complete it is finalized with Kens’ signature and dated. Finally, a custom built shipping box/crate is made specifically for your display. Ken's Fish recommends keeping the crate for transporting your display. Should you ever need to return your sculpture/reproduction for repair as most repairs can be made without a trace, you must use the original shipping box/crate to prevent further damage from occurring. Jumbo Series Ken's Fish “Jumbo Series” Sculptures are all sculpted from HD Urethane. There are No Limits to what can be sculpted from this medium. If you place an order with Ken's Fish for a replica of a 30 inch bluegill that you caught in your backyard pond, no questions asked, he can do it. Ken's Fish “Jumbo Series” Sculptures are very popular with bait shops, sporting goods stores, resorts, taverns and even personal basement bars. Miniature Series Ken's Fish “Miniature Series” Sculptures are all sculpted from kiln dried Basswood and are always viewable from all angles. The fish can be the actual size of a panfish to a miniature of a much larger size trophy fish. The fish sculptures itself are usually between eight and twelve inches in length. The habitat display can be very complex with the fish leaping from a pool of water complete with a realistic water splash to simply a fish picking up a nymph off the rocks of a river bed. The price of Ken's Fish “Miniature Series” Wood Sculptures with habitat is determined by the materials used and the complexity of the overall display. Due to the uniqueness of each sculpture display Ken can only quote a price upon you placing an order for commissioned work. You may purchase one that is available on our site or if there is something that you like that Ken has done in the past, he can make another one. Ken always recommends displaying them in a protective casing. Ken's Fish Sculptures with a splash scene will not be sold without a protective casing. Ken offers custom made, no distortion acrylic cases with mirror backing to fully enclosed custom made furniture (i.e. end tables and coffee tables etc.). About Ken's Fish Reproductions Ken has coined most of the fish reproductions in the industry today as “Typical Reproductions” for reasons explained here and in his FAQ’s link. With the popularity of “Catch & Release” with (at best) only a few specific species, he believes the industry has done very little to improve on the techniques developed 30 years ago. It didn't matter how well these "Typical Reproductions" were painted, customers always end up saying "They just don't look real". Ken believes that because of this lack of commitment to create a more realistic replica is why “Catch & Release” hasn’t taken off well with all species. This is the one reason why Ken has come up with Ken's “Life-Size Replicas” series of Fish Sculptures. However, there is good news! Ken has searched and found a source that meets his criteria of quality, detail and realistic looking reproductions. When Ken places an order with his source he requests that it be sent to him unfinished so he can apply his own detail work to the detail that already exists in the fish blank, giving it its' unique and realistic look, making it a "Ken's Fish Reproduction". Ken is proud to offer this line of fish reproductions to his customers because they are anything but "Typical"! You can rest assured that when you order a “Ken's Fish Reproduction” from Ken's Fish you are getting a fish reproduction with the most realistic look available today.
